You must have heard of the best-selling game of late last year with millions of copies sold worldwide and as many fans on all continents. The Nintendo Wii Fit is a sports game which consists of a collection of five sports simulations, designed to teach players to mimic actions performed in real life sports. The rules of each game (baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and boxing) are simplified – thus more accessible to new players – but ‘practise makes perfect’ and after a while you are likely to become very skilful at the sports of your choice.
The Nintendo Wii wouldn’t still be so acclaimed if it weren’t special. Unlike other game consoles that were released before it, this game uses a wireless motion sensitive controller (the Wii Remote, also known as Wii-mote) which you hold in one hand and move in order to control the action on the screen. Good-bye finger-and-thumb- numbing routines! This is a much more natural way to control the game and get to learn its secrets.
What is most interesting about this kind of game is the fact that it can really help you with fitness. Most activities that one can do on the computer are static, involving your brain and fingers. It is obvious that by getting involved in tennis and boxing with the Wii-mote in your hand you can even burn some calories.
Of course, don’t rely on this game only. It cannot do wonders and can never replace a regular fitness training regime but you will no longer feel like a couch potato. Though your legs may not move much, unless you are standing while playing (and even so, the amount of exercise is insignificant), you can bet the upper part of your body will be kept active if you play properly.
Try playing tennis in single player mode, against the computer, and don’t cheat; swing the Wii Remote as hard as you can. If you hit shots with effort, you will feel your heart rate increase and will surely lose some calories.
You can use boxing to get some action, by working on the bag and training for punch-throwing or by fighting against a computer opponent. To play boxing you will need the second controller (the Nunchuk) connected to the Wii Remote through a wire and plug and held in the opposite hand. However, if you want to learn boxing the right way, and gain some experience, work on the bag for some time. It is really fun.
